this black soil tells of a rural African-American community on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.  In 1992, the community heard via the radio that a maximum security prison was going to be built across the road from their village.  Through archival footage, the film is able to chronicle ten years of the community's history from the prison fight and the community's struggle with how to remake themselves, to the inspiring outcome.  The community, mostly run by women, and their story was featured on 60 Minutes, and in the NY  Times and Washington Post.

My first documentary film, it was made with the help, guidance and dedication of students from an advanced video class - starting in 1999, when I was teaching at Virginia Commonwealth University.  I finished the film in 2004 after moving back to the Midwest.
